Intercultural Design

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1

As part of our assignment, six-person teams were formed and tasked with creating a proposal about cultural sensitivity in design. We wererequired to select a country and create three design draughts that represented the specifics of that unique culture. We started by individually coming up with one idea on our own, then as a group we discussed and improved upon it.

The project revolves around "Cultural Sensitivity in Design" and began with a meeting at the library to choose a cultural phenomenon or subculture for research. The aim is to present the chosen aspect authentically and raise awareness through design concepts and visual research. After considering various ideas, the group decided to focus on Cinco de Mayo. They split into two groups—one for designing and the other for preparing the report and presentation.

Task 2

After completing our proposal, we proceeded with data collection, primarily relying on online research methods such as surveys, gathering digital materials, and conducting interviews via Zoom.

Moreover, for Project 1 (proposal), it is mandatory to assemble a diverse array of research materials encompassing visual, oral, textual, and tactile artifacts. These collected items and materials are to be meticulously preserved, documented, and accompanied by pertinent details including item type, material composition, functionality, significance, cultural or historical context, among other relevant information.

Task 3

For our final project, we opted to infuse a modern twist into our Cinco de Mayo theme. Our creative process commenced with crafting a heart-shaped piñata, symbolizing love and unity within communities. This was then embellished with vibrant, eye-catching colors to enhance its visual appeal. Additionally, we aimed to create visual design solutions that reflect our interpretation and understanding of "Framing," incorporating cultural and aesthetic elements while leveraging our design proficiency. We explored various avenues, including experimental approaches utilizing both manual and digital techniques, to ensure a balanced and impactful outcome. Overall, our goal was to inject contemporary design elements into the traditional celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

REFLECTION

Experience:

Reflecting on this module, I can confidently say it has been an enriching journey for me. Being introduced to this subject in my first year was advantageous as it prepared me psychologically for my upcoming academic years and future career in design. Cultivating cultural sensitivity has emerged as a crucial trait for designers, and this module has significantly contributed to my understanding of its importance.

Observation:

Throughout the seven weeks of this module, I found genuine enjoyment in every task we undertook. It was my first deep dive into another culture, particularly focusing on Cinco de Mayo, which was the central theme of our group's study. Prior to this module, I had never delved so extensively into researching a country's culture. The opportunity to explore the diverse cultural aspects of Mexico has been both enlightening and enjoyable.

Findings:

Engaging with our group, we unearthed numerous intriguing facets of Mexican culture, including its history, art, and cultural traditions. This module has broadened my understanding and appreciation for Mexican traditions and customs, which contribute to the country's unique and captivating identity. The support and guidance from instructors throughout the project were invaluable, facilitating a smooth progression and enhancing our overall learning experience.
