Task 3 - Type Exploration and Application

LECTURES

All lectures are completed in Task 1.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

For this task we were told to design a font based on our own specialization which is graphic design, so I chose to do packaging design about blind boxes in posters and packaging.

Task 3: Type Exploration

Progress of work:
1. Research & Proposal Ideations

2. Digitalisation

Fig2.2 Sketches on iPad (25/10/23)

I named this font as Cloud. It is rounded at the end and the shape in the centre is a little bit of curvy.

Firstly, I uses iPad to sketch it out cuz I think iPad is easier to arrange the gap and the thickness of the fonts.

So after I've done the sketches in iPad, I place the sketches into Illustration and use pen tool to trace it out and arrange the size of the font. it is not easy and it takes me lot of time to make the arrangement of the details part because using pen tool to trace out will make the edges of the font not smooth.

After smoothing the edges of the fonts, Mr Vinod asked us to arrange the uppercase fonts and lowercase fonts together to compare if there is any conflict between both of them.

After arranging he upper and lowercase of the font I immediately show Mr Vinod of this. He approved of my work and so this is my last and final attempt of this work.

3. FontLab

Next, I proceed to the fontlab step. I copy my fonts from Illustration and paste it in font lab to generate my fonts. After pasted in FontLab, I made some changes of the fonts gap cuz some of them are too narrow and some are too wide.

Application

For my application, I was planned to make a font of blind bot packaging design. So I created a font that are rounded on the edge and curvy. It matches the packaging of blind box cuz the packaging are way cuter same as the font.

FEEDBACKS

Week 9

Specific feedback: Use the poster as reference and start working the fonts from A-Z.

General feedback: Grids are compulsory for creating letterforms and need to keep the first sketches in Illustrator.

Week 10

Specific feedback: The fonts are okay and not really big matter.

Week 11

Specific feedback: The thickness of my fonts need to be the same. As the thickest part all must be same thickness and my thin part is too thin.

Week 12

Absent

Week 13

Specific feedback: Everything is done and start doing the application.

Week 14

Specific feedback: The application of my font is nice!

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
I loves to design typefaces! I found out it was so fun, once we start the progress we can't even stop it. For this Task 3, I enjoying do all the exercises in it. at first creating the fonts, then creating the application of it and last is the presentation of the slides. Every steps are interesting and after done all of it I felt satisfied to my artwork.

Observations:
In this task, I've learnt that all of the work couldn't done bye last minute. it takes time. I think that my time management has improved and I will done my homework earlier during this task and wouldn't drag until the day before the due date.

Findings:
I found that the thickness, kerning, spacing it all matters to the letter font. Every single step will make the font looks different. The most important issue of the font is the readability, it must be cleared.
